Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s impact on Our country should never be taken as just another holiday, or day off from work. Celebrating his birth is a reminder of his existence as a national leader at a time we needed it the most. Dr. King symbolized the anchor runner in a relay race who took the baton of civil rights from thousands of runners before him. Unlike others, Dr. King with the assistance of many (the Dr. King led Southern Christian Leadership Conference, and black and white social activist) was able to cross the finish line with the passage of the Civil Rights Act of 1964, and the Voting Rights Act of 1965.

Until the passage of both Acts, Black people were denied the rights to exist in this country as equal citizens as defined in the Civil Rights Act of 1866, and the failed Civil Rights act of 1875. It took Dr. King’s leadership, courage and strong faith in God to push our government to enact these modern laws that allow us the freedoms and opportunities we take for granted today.We encourage you to review each of these Acts as you will see common struggles we see today, but we hope you will also appreciate how far we have come. Take this time to have a conversation with those who remember the 1960’s and reflect on those times. Let us assure we are honoring Dr. King’s efforts through what we do today!
